Though not as stellar as the past few weeks, it’s certainly not bad.
First, the DVD picks:
- Adventures of Black Beauty: Season Two
- Alien Uprising
- Bakugan: Vol. 4
- Big Iron Collection: Includes “Crooked River,” “Colorado Ranger,” “Fast on the Draw,” “Hostile Country,” “Marshal of Heldorado” and “West of the Brazos”
- Campfire Tales
- Chaos Experiment
- Daffy Duck’s Quackbusters
- Days that Shook the World: Complete Second Season
- Elvis Presley: The Ed Sullivan Show Performances
- Evil Christmas: Includes “Psycho Santa” and “Satan Claus”
- Flight of the Conchords: Season Two
- Fragments

- Mahoromatic, Vol. 3: Full Metal Maid Complete Collection
- Moribito Vol. 5: Guardian of the Spirit
- Mutant Chronicles: Single Disc Edition
- Mutant Chronicles: 2 Disc Collector’s Edition
- The Mysteries of Pittsburgh
- Obsessed
- Paintball the Movie: Court Jesters
- Project Runway: Season Five
- Race to Witch Mountain: Single Disc Edition
- Race to Witch Mountain: Two disc edition
- Sakura Wars TV: Complete Collection: A: Based on the series of Dating Sim Strategy Games (of which the 5th installment is getting a US release – but not games 1-4.)
- Samurai Deeper Kyo: Complete Series
- The Shape of the World: B: Hint – think “beach ball.”
- Slayers Seasons 1-3 Boxed Set: A: As the title says, this has “The Slayers”, “Slayers Next”, and “Slayers Try”. This was almost my digital disk pick for this week.
- Soloist
- The Tigger Movie
- Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!: Season Three
- TNA Sacrifice 2009: A: Featuring, if I recall correctly, Peter “Taz” Senerca’s debut with TNA. Being that he is in no condition to be a ringside manager, much less a wrestler, unless they’re canning Don West (yes please) or Mike Tenay (I’d rather they didn’t), I have no idea what he’s going to do. (Maybe Shane Douglas will return to the ring and Taz will be a backstage interviewer).
- Ulysses
- Unsolved Mysteries: Ghosts 1
- WWE Summerslam Complete Anthology, Volume Three
- You Must Remember This: The Warner Bros. Story: B: This is tagged as an “Amazon.com Exclusive.” I don’t know if that means an exclusive product, exclusive release date, or exclusive packaging.
Now, the Blu-Ray picks:
- Big Trouble In Little China
- Italian Job: 40th Anniversary Edition
- Labor Pains
- Mutant Chronicles
- My Cousin Vinny
- Mysteries of Pittsburgh
- Obsessed
- Race to Witch Mountain
- Sling Blade
- Soloist
- Stargate Atlantis: Fans’ Choice
- The Waterboy
Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “If you’ve got Blu-Ray, get Big Trouble In Little China – particularly if you don’t own a copy yet. If you don’t have a Blu-Ray player, I’d recommend picking up Slayers Seasons 1-3. Season 4 recently was licenced and the English release is currently in production.” Blaine says, “If you’ve got Blu-Ray, I recommend My Cousin Vinny. If you don’t have Blu-Ray, pick up something that didn’t fit in the budget that was released on the 21st or 28th instead.”
Oh crap! I can’t believe I missed that!
I am now changing my pick of the week to “The Shape of the World”. It’s a pretty interesting documentary on map-making from the early 90s (so, alas, it’s dated in certain respects) done by Grenada TV, the BBC, and PBS, featuring Patrick Stewart. I’ve had a VHS tape of it for quite some time, but the tape is old and getting worn out. So, as soon as I get the money, I will be getting that.
(Alas, this isn’t the first time I missed an awesome documentary that got a DVD release. I also missed The Day The Universe Changed when it got a DVD release as well.
Note – This is my Standard Def pick. If you’ve got Blu-Ray, get Big Trouble in Little China first.
The original “The Italian Job” is fantastic. If I didn’t have it on DVD I’d be picking that up on Blu-Ray.
If you’re one of the few people out there who hasn’t seen Big Trouble in Little China, I feel happy that you’ll be able to view Kurt Russel’s awesomeness in HD. Lo Pan might be one of the best pulp villains ever to grace the screen, plus, hey, early Kim Cattrall?
Big Trouble is one of those films that shouldn’t be as good as it is.
I can’t give much of a recommendation to Quackbusters, however, one of those Warner Brothers Frankenfilms stitched together from old cartoons. The old cartoons work better on their own, in their complete form.
