Special-Special Edition Confirmed

Following up on a previous post, Rick McCallum, Lucas’s right-hand man, has confirmed the original trilogy on DVD. It will be three years away (jives with Lucas’s early announcement) and it will contain even more changes.

My favorite quote from the piece: "With George… he’ll keep on changing the film till the day he dies."

  1. like star trek, will we get original edition too?
i for one can’t stand the special edition original trilogy, i’m not looking forward to more monkeying with it. but i’d be satisfied as long as it includes an option to watch the original cut.

I’m still waiting for somebody to do something truly creative with the power of DVD: LET ME PICK THE SCENES!

It’s entirely possible. I should be able to put in my Star Wars: Special Special Special Edition DVD and choose to show all extra scenes EXCEPT “Greedo Fired First.”

      But that’ll never happen.

Forget leaving out “Greedo Fired First.” I want to see this feature for TPM so I can leave out Jar-Jar.

What I really wonder is if Lucas is going to release three seperate DVDs or one box set with the original trilogy with three or four DVDs. Or maybe he will wait six month after Episode III is released on DVD and then release a box set with all six moves.

So far thats the only reason I don’t own TPM yet, I want the original trilogy on DVD and I expect Lucas to only release them in a box set with all six movies. I think he will sell as many Ep 1, 2 and 3 DVDs as he can and then force people to buy another copy of all three movies if they want to own Ep 4, 5 and 6.

I don’t think Lucas would do that, although I believe McCallum would. George Lucas was the
one who opposed a stripped down release of TPM before the edition with extras because he didn’t want the
devoted fans to waste money on multiple editions. I expect to see a similar release model to the special
edition on VHS, with movies available individually or in the box. This time, though, I expect three boxes; a
six movie edition, and two more boxes with each trilogy (somewhat like the DVD release structure for the Star
          Trek movies.)

  2. Jar-Jar?
Do you suppose Lucas will insert Jar-Jar as a crew member on the Millenium Falcon?

  3. LD rules
I’m glad I still have my laserdisc player. Those may be big and old-fashioned but at least I have the Star Wars special edition trilogy and the Back To The Future trilogy with a much better than VHS quality :)
