The first season finale begins well, and develops in directions not charted by the source material. The final bang, alas, proves something of a whimper.

2012
No, we’re not reviewing the Hollywood movie effects reel for Weekend Review. We’ve got an essay on the apocalyptic controversy that inspired it.
In 2012, London, England will host the Olympics, the world will observe the hundredth anniversaries of both the Titanic disaster and of Alan Turing’s birth, and, if we believe internet buzz and popular rumor, the world will end. The reason for the belief? An ancient Mayan calendar ends its count.
This isn’t the first time the Mayan “Long Count” Calendar has entered popular culture.
Fringe Discussion: “Entrada”
We’re a little late this week.
What did people think of this week’s episode, in which Peter learns a few things about Olivia, and we learn that the war between worlds may be, to a significant degree, a war between Walters?
Caprica Review: “Apotheosis”
The final episode of Caprica actually managed to resolve enough that most viewers should be able to make the jump to Battlestar Galactica. It had its flaws, to be certain, but no one could call this ep slow-paced. Caprica lasted only one, uneven season but, judged strictly as a prequel, it proves more successful than either Enterprise or Jar Wars Episodes I-III.
The Walking Dead Review: “Wildfire”
The penultimate episode of the first season proves perhaps the most intense since the first.
Caprica Discussion: “Here Be Dragons”
We’ll have a review next week, of the final episode and the series as a whole. This week’s high-stakes episode has the Graystones make their approach on the Angels, Amanda take action against Sam, the Gautrau make his move against the Adamas, and Sister Clarisse bring the war to the Graystones.
Anyone else watching? Are most of our readers waiting until SyFy airs them, in January?
Are we not watching at all?
SFContario #1 a Success
The Walking Dead Review: “Vatos”
“Vatos” represents the series’ most uneven episode to date– but it comes to a dark, uncompromising, and powerful conclusion.
Caprica Review: “The Heavens will Rise”
Are we witnessing the rise of Imperious Leader Lacey?
Who has Clarisse’s holoband?
And will we receive answers to any of those questions, given that the series won’t see another season?
The Walking Dead Review: “Tell It to the Frogs”
In addition to zombies, the survivors have to deal with racial tensions, class issues, gender inequities, relationship problems, and basic primate behavior. Even in its slowest episode to date, Walking Dead buries 95% of contemporary television.
And we still get some zombie mayhem.
