This weekend sees the release of a space opera and a D&Desque fantasy. Both revolve around a Chosen One; both have been chosen for largely negative reviews (though Jupiter‘s F/X look great).
This would be the place to defend, diss, and discuss these genre Valentines.
Here in the States, Sunday was a massive advertising extravaganza. I believe there was also a sporting event to go with it.

Well, it’s finally here. It’s not much to go on, but we finally get a look at the new Fantastic Four coming in August.
The full slate of nominations is here, and as usual, genre entertainment has its best showing in the technical awards. Thankfully, biopics about real life geeks The Imitation Game and The Theory of Everything both did very well in the major awards.
The latest podcast about silver screen superheroes is the first with the new title, and covers The Shadow (1994).
And it’s not ant-sized or a teaser for a trailer or anything like that. The actual, honest-to-Stan-Lee trailer for the film.

This year’s Christmas Review covers yet another adaptation of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. This 1970 version is a musical, with Albert Finney as Scrooge and Sir Alec Guinness as Marley’s Ghost. It serves up Dickens with a vision of Hell on the side– and it’s the first film adaptation I ever saw.

Not a superhero movie, of course, but a darkly comic tour de force about an actor who used to play one. Mentally disturbed and financially troubled, Riggan appears on Broadway in an attempt to establish his credibility as an artist.
Whether Broadway constitutes a temple of high culture makes an interesting question. As for Birdman, he will not be bound.
