Weekly DVD Picks – Tuesday, July 12, 2005
This week’s DVDs aren’t quite as interesting as this
week’s books. (Remember, Harry Potter and the
Half Blood Prince will be out on July 16.)

Movie Review – “Fantastic Four”
This year’s big Marvel movie property just hit
screens. I caught it opening night to write this
review, which meant not buying tickets to see Bo
Diddley live. I hope you all appreciate the sacrifice
that was. (I made plans to see this before they went
and moved the release date, or announced the day
Diddley was in town.)

The Legion of Time
Summer’s here, and the time is right for dancing in the street, lounging on the beach, and coding in the basement. (Or meeting other people who write stuff online, which is how I spent last weekend). It’s also the traditional time for lighter reading, and fans of SF might want to delve into the genre’s past, into the world of swashbuckling pulp adventure fueled by mind-bending concepts.
Jack Williamson ranked among the best of the Ray Gun school, and he continued to develop as a writer; he continues to this day. He has written and co-written more than fifty novels and, along the way, he coined the terms “genetic engineering” (Dragon’s Island), “terraforming” (Seetee Ship) and, in this novel, Jonbar Point.
Charlie Jade: Through a Mirror Darkly
This week’s episode provides significant amounts of explanation– and violence.
Weekly Comics Discussion – July 6, 2005
NOTE: Due to the July 4 holiday, most retailers in the
U.S.A. will receives shipments on Thursday, July 7
instead of Wednesday, July 6. This week is a bit of
an oddity for another reason: I don’t plan to pick up
anything on the shipping
list. DC is offering items such as The Return
of Donna Troy #2, Superman: The Healing
Touch TPB, and a number of statues based on
Crisis on Infinite Earths. Marvel is
offering Amazing Fantasy #10, Daredevil
vs. Punisher #1 (of 6), reprints of Essential
Daredevil Vol. 1 and Essential Iron Man Vol.
1, Exiles #66 (which I’ll get in TPB
form later this year), House of M #3 as well
as issues of the spinoff minis for Fantastic
Four and Iron Man, dollar digests based
on Fantastic Four, Hulk,
Spider-Man, and X-Men, and
Ultimate Spider-Man #79 (which I will also
get in TPB form later this year.)
