It’s another odd week for the “pick of the week.”
First, the genre releases:
- 3rd
Rock from
the Sun: Season 3: This marks half the series now
available on DVD. - Adventures
of
Superman: Season One: There’s no sign of this
release at TVShowsOnDVD.com,
and the
description is no further help. Still, at $11.19,
that’s a worthwhile
price for any of the options. I’ve decided to risk it
and find out
just what this is. - Gatchaman
Collection 5 (Vol. 9 and 10): Gotta love that Alex
Ross box art. - The
One Step
Beyond Collection: This sounds like old school
“Psi Factor.” - Stuart
Little
3 – Call of the Wild: I didn’t even know they were
making this
traditionally animated sequel, but they got Michael J.
Fox and Geena
Davis back on board, so there must be some merit to
the script. - Ultimate
Avengers: This animated adaptation of The
Ultimates is
not aimed at children. It’s the first in a series of
Marvel animated
features, and will have a sequel out this summer. I’m
checking it
out, and will post a review for those interested. - Voyage
to the
Bottom of the Sea, Vol. 1: The classic
series. - Watch
the
Skies!: A collection of old, cheesy sci-fi
flicks.
Now, the non-genre releases:
- Action:
The
Complete Series: Good reputation, bad ratings. It
happens. - All
The
President’s Men: If you can wait one more week,
you can get this
in the Controversial Classics Collection Vol.
2 with
Network and Dog Day Afternoon. - Class
of
1984: This is one of the movies I keep hearing
about but haven’t
seen. - Domino
(Widescreen Edition): I like the cast and the
director, but I’ve
heard that the movie was a let down. - Erik
the
Viking: While it doesn’t have the Monty Python
brand name, it has
a significant chunk of their creative team. - The
Laurel or
Hardy Collection: Yes, that’s “or” instead of
“and.” This
collects work they did before they teamed up. - Midnight
Cowboy (Two Disc Collector’s Edition): Which is
somehow not a part
of the second Controversial Classics
collection… - North
Country: Again, it’s something I know more by its
respected
creative team than by the movie itself. - NYPD
Blue –
Season Three: I never did watch this show. - The
Orson
Welles Collection: Includes The Stranger,
King
Lear, David and Goliath and The
Trial. - The
Paramount
Comedy Shorts 1928-1942: Robert Benchley and the
Knights of the
Algonquin: Kino Video always does a great job.
Consider this one
for sure. - The
Paramount
Comedy Shorts 1929-1933: Cavalcade of Comedy: A
nice companion
package, also by Kino. - Rent:
This
is a two disk edition. - The
Weather
Man: Another recent movie I didn’t get around to
watching.
Finally, the pick of the week. Oddly enough, we’ve
got a week filled
with releases I haven’t seen. Based on reputation,
I’d go with the
Orson Welles or Kino sets, and based on curiosity, I’d
go with
Ultimate Avengers or Adventures of
Superman Vol. 1,
but apart from that, I can’t really state a definite
pick.
Most likely
Or they have good contract lawyers who make people sign for any sequel or adaptation from the get go.
Re: Most likely
Those clauses usually don’t include direct-to-video material. Still, it’s certainly possible.
The Weatherman
Did anyone else see this?
The only reason I did was because I have a friend who’s a huge Nick Cage fan. I enjoyed it, but it’s definitely not for everyone – it reminded me of both Punch Drunk Love and Bottle Rocket, with a dash of American Beauty (the commercials really didn’t do it credit – I was not expecting what I saw).
Action
I’m SO glad that’s coming out. I only saw like, 5 episodes and I liked them a lot.
I’m waiting for the 28th so I can get Season 3 of Newsradio.
Re: Action
I missed the show (like too many people) during its first run and watched the series when it aired on FX. Action would definitely be my pick of the week.
