If you’ve been following the non-political news this last week, you know that members of the Utah Department of Public Safety, while counting Bighorn sheep, discovered a monolith in the Utah desert. It is, of course, an object strangely familiar to SF fans….

Star Trek Discovery Review: “Scavengers”
“My sentiments exactly.”
–Saru, in response to Tilly losing her composure and swearing multiple times.
Burnham and Georgiou play action heroes in a serviceable Trek planet story while the rest of the crew adjust to upgrades and future realities.
John Scalzi Guest Post
John Scalzi’s blog always makes for interesting reading and, while he needs no help from guest-posts, he generously shares his audience with other writers, well-known and not-so-well-known.
For those of you interested, here’s a Bureau42 contribution to The Big Idea at Scalzi’s blog.
Graphic Novel Review: Kent State: Four Dead in Ohio
At 288 pages, Kent State definitely qualifies as a graphic novel. But it’s more than that. Derf Backderf has crafted an immersive experience on paper, released at a time when American society is, once again, politically polarized and awash in falsehoods, some of them emanating from the highest office in the land.
SpaceX to launch “Resilience”
Star Trek Discovery Review: “Die Trying”
This week, Discovery finds the home base of what’s left of the Federation. It brings us a decent “mystery in space” episode with the usual character interaction, ethical issues, and technobabble. Invitation to a Book Launch: The Con
How often does the Bureau get a shout-out in the acknowledgements of a novel?
The Con was released t Friday, November 13, 2020. The e-launch party will be streamed on Twitch-TV at 6:00 pm EST on November 14. Anyone can watch by clicking the link. If you create/have an account and log-in, you can participate. Has your favorite fan convention been canned due to COVID? Consider The Con: SF Fans meet the Jane Austen Society at a hotel that may also be hosting an actual alien presence. High tea, a robot battle, nerds gone wild, religious LARPERS, the Augur of Quaoar, and the quest to answer one of history’s great questions: does anything we do matter– or is it all just a con?
Star Trek Discovery Review: “Forget Me Not”
After a generally strong start to its third season, Discovery falters a little with a uneven ep that features a strong primary plot and a well-conceived but unconvincing secondary one.

Sir Sean Connery, 1930-2020
Sean Connery, best-known as the first actor to play James Bond on the big screen and a seven-times Bond, has died at ninety. His lengthy career also included an Oscar-winning performance in The Untouchables (1988), and an appearance in the Indiana Jones franchise (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), of course).
Rest in Peace.
Star Trek Discovery Discussion: “People of Earth”
I’m rather busy this weekend, so I’m foregoing a review of this week’s Discovery, a Jonathan Frakes-directed episode (written by Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt) which takes the crew to an isolationist earth, where they encounter hostility, divisions, and…
