Preacher Discussion: “Sundowner”

“You broke my kid’s art thing!”

This one’s late, and not even a review. “Sundowner” begins with an entertaining and quite ridiculous fight scene in which the bodies of three of the participants pile up. The episodes contrasts this insanity with scenes involving Tulip and Emily, and then Tulip and Cassidy. We also have a good deal of the backstory explained (assuming we’re hearing from reliable sources). Things are actually happening. Many of these are not nice things, however. Our titular Preacher is either seriously overwhelmed by his pride, or by the thing that possesses him, “Genesis.”

And his powers may be greater than we realize.

The episode leaves us with Jesse doing something really dangerous.

Noel Neill, R.I.P.

Noel Neill, an actress whose career intertwined with the Man of Steel’s, died July 3 at the age of 95.

Neill was the first actress to play Lois Lane in a live action film, the 1948 Superman serial. She reprised the role in Atom Man vs Superman, and later took over the role from Phyllis Coates after the first season of The Adventures of Superman. She also made cameo appearances in Superman (1978) (as Lois’s mother), the late 80s / early 90s Superboy series, and Superman Returns (2006). She also had small roles in a couple of Hollywood classics, most notably Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), and in at least one other TV show with “genre” connections, The Lone Ranger. Although she mostly retired after The Adventures of Superman, her role as Lois kept her in fandom’s eye.

Summer Weekend Review: The Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow

The Legend of Tarzan opened this weekend to very mixed reviews. I’m sure I’ll catch it sometime, but really, what’s the point of revisiting Tarzan yet again? This is the weekend to be swinging free in the real world, with American Independence Day, Canada Day, and many a Pride Festival and EDM event all happening. You’ve also got Cons in Washington, DC (Escape Velocity), Miami (Supercon), Baltimore (Counterpoint), and Portland (Westercon).

But we must have a Summer Weekend Review, and so, hipsters, flipsters, and finger-poppin’ daddies, lend a lobe and dig this gig from 1959.

“May I have a moment to myself, please?”
–Jennifer Goines, before her conference with Jennifer Goines

The apocalypse is so much more challenging when everyone is crazy and factions are splintering.

The series takes a break next week, with two more episodes before the season ends. This episode sets up the likely plots for each of those episodes
