r/StrangeNewWorlds - Youd think the enterprise would be better armed for what it does

The episode sparked a lot of discussion on Reddit, mostly around the framing device of being a “documentary”.

  1. My wife said it felt like propaganda for the military or ICE. While I doubt Star Trek was on the side of ICE, it did feel like they were doing an episode for all the enlisted Trekkers who don’t think the entire concept of the military is a bunch of Imperial Storm Troopers.

    • This is one of those episodes that could be re-contextualized over the years depending on current events (like “Past Tense” from DS9).

There are episodes of SNW where the writers seem to be expressly answering old fan questions. This was their chance to really answer the age-old question whether Starfleet is a military or science organization. Clearly Ortegas’ brother had an axe to grind in this documentary.

For the record, I’ve always equated Starfleet with the Coast Guard. They’re armed, but only for defensive or law enforcement purposes. Maybe it’s time for Star Trek show aboard a science or rescue ship.

      • DISCO was a science ship.

A recovery ship sounds like a great way to have an episode of the week storyline as they’re showing up to various disasters, ships with a flat nacelle, and ecologically devastated planets to save people. Make season arcs based on an ongoing issue, like the Orions pushing into the $made-up-name Expanse…

      • I’m ready for Star Trek without the Federation. Had I been asked to pitch in the streaming era, I’d have pitched a show with Jake Sisko, traveling correspondent, exploring non-Federation space and writing about the people and cultures. Of course, in later seasons, he’d stumble on a larger conspiracy by piecing together small oddities going back right to the first season, so he’d have to reach out to his good friend Captain Nog to ask for Federation help. The second last season finale would be the return of Ben Sisko, keeping his promise to return, and doing so now because now is the time of need.

        • You mean a Voyager style series?

Sisko also returned in the comics, too, so they’d have to address how that coincides. So far, (since I started reading IDW’s current run,) they haven’t contradicted anything directly, but there’d have to be a bit of attention paid to those characters.

Given what they keep mentioning, I suspect we’d see Jake being embedded with The Fenris Rangers, but if you start following the vigilantes, you get away from the core idea of Star Trek. Though I wouldn’t mind seeing the comic character Lily Sato in a series…
