Weekly Comics Discussion – April 15, 2009

As usual, the complete list can be found here.

Dark Horse Comics

  • STAR WARS CLONE WARS #5 (OF 6) – Chad can breathe again. (Also, Chad, there are two more titles hitting next week.)

DC Comics

  • 100 BULLETS #100 – I believe this is the last issue.
  • ACTION COMICS #876
  • FABLES #83
  • GREEN ARROW BLACK CANARY #19
  • GREEN LANTERN CORPS #35 – Setting up Blackest Night
  • ORACLE #2 (OF 3)
  • SUPERMAN BATMAN #58
  • TRINITY #46
  • WORLD OF WARCRAFT #18
  • X-FILES (OF 6) – If there’s interest, I’ll review these at some point.

IDW Comics

  • ANGEL SMILE TIME #3

Image Comics

  • WALKING DEAD #60

Marvel Comics

  • AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #591 – This promises to explain why nobody can remember who Spider-Man is under the mask. All we know so far is that Peter’s in on it, but he had help. Also, as of last week’s issue, the Fantastic Four now know they used to know, but can’t remember why they don’t remember. It’s really freaking Johnny out. Issue 590 was the issue I’ve enjoyed the most since “One More Day” began.
  • CAPTAIN AMERICA #49 – A consistently great title under Brubaker’s pen.
  • DARK TOWER SORCERER #1
  • ENDERS SHADOW BATTLE SCHOOL #4 (OF 5)
  • ESSENTIAL DAZZLER TP VOL 02
  • EXILES ULTIMATE COLLECTION TP BOOK 01 – This goes back to the beginning of the series, when it was simply great.
  • HALO UPRISING #4 (OF 4)
  • INCOGNITO #3 – This week’s #1 review priority. Brubaker and Philips knocked it out of the park with the first two issues. Val Staples even got an Eisner nomination for the colouring. Great, great title, with the first two getting reprinted (again) in a “Marvel Must Have” format shortly.
  • MARVEL TRIPLE ACTION #1 – An anthology title, reprinting stuff previously released in the “Marvel Adventures” and “First Class” lines.
  • PUNISHER #4 – For the first time ever, I’m enjoying a Punisher story and looking forward to the next issue. That should tell you a LOT about how well they’re doing with this. “Dark Reign” is the perfect backdrop for the character.
  • RAMPAGING WOLVERINE #1
  • SI AFTERMATH BETA RAY BILL GREEN OF EDEN #1
  • SUB-MARINER COMICS 70TH ANNIV SPECIAL #1
  • UNCANNY X-MEN #508 – The start of a new story arc that seems to be hinting at the return of Jean Grey.
  • WOLVERINE NOIR #1 (OF 4)

  1. I’ve decided to try STRANGE ADVENTURES OF HP LOVECRAFT #1 (OF 4) from Image Comics. Anyone heard anything about it?

  2. Spider-Girl, who’s run in Amazing Spider-Girl ended with issue 30, is now moving to the digital comics in Spectacular Spider-Girl.

I wonder how that will turn out…

  3. Star Wars: So, Chad, how are these titles doing? Interested in reviewing stuff? :) If not, what do you think of, say, the Clone Wars series on now?

Spider-Man: I thought the whole point of the “reboot” was that nobody would know anything. As soon as people know there’s something they’ve forgotten they’re going to find out what it was — this is what they do. (And I don’t think the FF would be particularly happy to find out Spider-Man arranged it all to save his 120-year-old aunt…)

    • The Star Wars comics are somewhere between mediocre and good. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic has moved somewhat off-track into the mundane, but it’s a light–hearted romp. Star Wars: Legacy tends to be pretty good. I don’t particularly like Star Wars: Dark Times—too much of it is about fallen Jedi who no longer follow their basic tenets. There have been some pretty good issues of Star Wars: Rebellion, but Dark Horse has put the series on hold, in favor of the Clone Wars stuff. And I find most of the Clone Wars comics to be mediocre. Hopefully the new Star Wars: Invasion will be good.

Regarding the animated Clone Wars series, I like it. Most of the shows are better than average, but not great.
