Manga Review – Justy

This week I have a manga review for you of a title I picked up at Kumoricon. It’s an older manga title, back when they were publishing them in the US like comic books, flipped and in smaller chunks, instead of the larger Tankobon volumes. This one is an early space opera title put out in the US by Viz when they were just getting started. Continue reading →

Deadpool Movie Gets Reboot, Magneto Movie DOA

Empire Online has an article reporting on the future of the X-Men Franchise, particularly the upcoming Wolverine, Deadpool, and X-Men First Class films, as well as the Magneto films. The good news is that the Deadpool film is going to be a re-boot, so we’ll be able to get the wise-cracking Merc With The Mouth (as well as his supporting cast – though there’s no mention of Bob: Agent of Hydra). The bad news is that we’re probably not going to get the Magneto movie, at least not unless the de-aging technology they used for part of X-Men 3 becomes much cheaper.

I’d like to thank Chad for the story submission, and if you have any stories you would like to submit to the site, feel free to send them to fiziko(at)bureau42.com with “Story Submission” in the subject line.

Evangelion 1.0 Isn’t Elgible For Oscar But Ponyo Is

Anime News Network is reporting that Neon Genesis Evangelion 1.0: You Are (not) Alone, the first film of Gainax’s Eva reset film trilogy is, unfortunately, not eligible for the Academy award for Best Animated Feature. According to the Acadamy’s rules, a foreign film is eligible for nomination for this year’s awards if it first opened outside the US after January 1st, 2008. However, Eva 1.0 opened on September 1st, 2007, and Funimation licensed the film around December. Ponyo, however, is elgible, meeting the requirements for US and Domestic release dates. Q & A with Viz On New Original Comic Project

Anime Vice has an interview with Eric Searleman, senior editor of their new original content program. Basically, Viz is getting back into publishing OEL (Original English Language) Manga again, and they’re accepting open submissions. So, if you’re looking to getting into comics and you’re willing to work in the somewhat smaller layout of manga, this might be a way to get your first work out there (aside from going with web comics). If you can’t draw, that’s okay – they’re willing to accept writer only submissions as well. I don’t know if they’re looking for individual artists at the moment.

The Disappearance Of Haruhi Suzumiya Gets Theatrical Release

AnimeVice.com is reporting that The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, the fourth novel in the Haruhi series, is being adapted for a theatrical release (as an animated film, not a live-action one). There had been prior rumors that the novel would be adapted to the second season of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, but instead the series was taken up by an adaptation of the novel The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya, and adaptations of the short story “Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody”, and an 8-episode adaptation of the short story “Endless Eight”. Weekend Review – Ghost In The Shell 2: Innocence

This weekend I review Mamoru Oshii’s second outing on Ghost In The Shell. Fizko reviewed the first movie, now it’s my turn with the second. Does this one address some of the problems with the characterization, if not the pacing of the first (though, I liked the pacing of the first, particularly some of the Blade Runner-esque shots of the city, but I digress). On with the review! Continue reading →

Kirby Estate Seek To Regain Control Of Rights To Characters

The New York Times is reporting (no registration required) that the heirs of Jack Kirby have sent notices of Copyright Termination to Marvel, 20th Century Fox, Sony Pictures, Universal Pictures and others to regain the rights to various characters Kirby created or helped create, including The Incredible Hulk, The Fantastic Four, The X-Men, Spider-Man, Iron Man and The Avengers (or those members of the roster that Kirby drew).
