Weekend Review: Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders

Don’t worry: that Rogue One review is forthcoming. Meanwhile, we’re taking a look at a recent contribution to Bat-animation.

Return of the Caped Crusaders saw limited release in October 2016 and quickly found its way to home viewing. A tribute to the campy, cult Batman of the 1960s, featuring the voices of series originals Adam West, Burt Ward, and Julie Newmar, it uses animation and an awareness of the Dark Knight’s history to take Batman ’66 where period TV could never go.

DC/Hanna-Barbera Crossover Madness

Many years ago, I suggest in a list of possible Elseworlds tales the ultimate ridiculous premise, “Frank Miller’s gritty take on the Banana Splits.”

Well, DC will be crossing its mainstream characters next year with its re-imagined Hanna-Barbera titles. Booster Gold will join forces with the reimagined Flintstones, Green Lantern will team up with Space Ghost, and (although Frank Miller won’t be writing), the Suicide Squad will meet the Banana Splits.

Comic Review: Superman: American Alien

The most-discussed DC comic of last year may be American Alien, written by Max Landis and illustrated by various artists.

Landis, son of a Hollywood director, posted a very funny Youtube video on the 1990s Death and Return of Superman story arc / media event, in which he suggested (among many other things) that very little new could be done with the Man of Steel.

Several screen/teleplays and a handful of comics later, he challenges that notion, at least somewhat, with this series.

Arrow Review: “Invasion!”

The twin premises aren’t original, but the four-show crossover has been improving with each installment. For the Arrow-centric episode, Ollie and his traditional associates encounter pretty much everyone of significance from the show’s history, while Supergirl, the Flash, Cisco, and the new Team Arrow work to rescue the captured heroes and prevent an alien invasion.
