Okay, How to Train Your Dragon and Hot Tub Time Machine, both of which opened to boffo b.o. this weekend, would seem to have very little in common. However, both represent the increasing presence of genre in the mainstream.
Since we don’t have reviews for either yet, we thought we’d post some discussion space for both.
The big-budget remake of Harryhausen’s Clash of the Titans hits the theaters next weekend. The original (reviewed by Fiz awhile back) ranks among his worst film. His effects-filled 1963 sandal epic, Jason and the Argonauts, saw more “A” list playing houses than his previous work, and Harryhausen considers it his best.
How well has it held up?
I was told, in no uncertain terms, that this had to go up this week. And we also have a look at the new Predators movie, another trailer for Kick Ass, and Dreamworks next flick.
Haven’t had anything juicy for a while, but here’s a few drool-worthy nuggets. And another f-ing Twilight movie.

The Razzie awards are celebrating their 30th anniversary this year. Not only did they “honour” this year’s worst theatrical output, but they’ve also pointed out some notables from the entire decade.
Tim Burton’s 3D vision of the Lewis Carroll classic opened this weekend. How does it hold up? Can Burton still deliver in the new visual format?
I’ve not been a fan of Hollywood’s frenzied desire to remake every film, television show, and cartoon that ever succeeded, but a remake of The Wolf Man actually made sense to me. The original film first appeared nearly seventy years ago. It features a great premise and it holds up, after a fashion. However, the hammy period acting, limited special effects, and underdeveloped backstory affect its reception in 2010. A clever director could transform those elements for the present, while composing a kind of Valentine to the great old horror movies.
Does this film succeed?
MTV is reporting that Joseph Kosinski, the director of the upcoming sequel to Tron would like to next work on an re-imagining of Disney’s other big Sci-Fi film, “The Black Hole”. His plan for the film would involve take a more hard Sci-Fi take on the story, taking advantage of more recent scientific discoveries and theories about the nature of black holes and how they work. The script is doe to be written by Travis Beacham, who wrote the re-make of “Clash of the Titans” that is due in theaters this year.
