For Valentines Day, Discovery reunites the crew with some established characters, and takes a quest into the bizarre Mycelial Network, where it finds stranger things.

The strongest second-season Discovery episode to date brings us a Big Not-So-Dumb Object, a dying Saru, bickering techies, comparatively thoughtful social commentary, and some by-the-way explanations for discontinuities between the tech of this series and Kirk’s era.

Who you gonna call? Sporebusters!
Beyond spore drives, improved effects, and occasional swearing, Discovery distinguishes itself from previous Treks by its serial storytelling. Nevertheless, the first two episodes of Season Two featured something resembling contained stories. With the third episode, we’re clearly in chapter mode, with several segments of story arcs.
The postwar Klingons have started growing their hair, but they still sport prosthetic make-up that makes their facial expressions less human and readable.

“Initiating donut maneuver.”
As far as produced Trek goes, Christopher Pike was Kirk 1.0, but in this episode, which very much hearkens to the classic series, we see a critical difference.
Pike actually follows the Prime Directive which, apparently, applies even to star-lost Terrans who have sent a distress signal.

January is screeching past us as the third week of the year is already over. As we stride into the end of the month, the comics start seriously returning to television. Supergirl fights to keep the name Carol Danvers from being popular, The Flash gets angry, Arrow tries to chill out, and the Legends and Black Lightning are without a synopsis. The Gifted gets sleepy. Riverdale prepares for their college prep tests, because those kids are actually high-schoolers, surprise! The Punisher has released Season 2 for Netflix, and as of this posting has not been cancelled yet. While not technically a comic, out in space the Discovery and the Orville also share a nigh of television which really highlights the differences between the two shows.

Oh, there you are! The midwinter break has come to a close and we are seeing the regular comic television return. The Gifted weathered the winter weather better than others, even if the Bureau42 reviews did not. That Reviewer really needs to stop messing with time lines and just post the reviews already. The Flash has raced back to us first, with what is sure to be some sound uses of physics and technology. Arrow thought he was out, but is pulled back in. The Gifted has the Mutant Underground reorganize, and the Riverdale teens deal with Veronica’s father’s takeover.
Also, Netflix is giving us Season 2 of The Punisher before the inevitable annunciation of its cancellation, and in case you wanted something non-comic related, there’s a new Star Trek: Discovery. Though if you wanted something non-comic related, you probably are in the wrong thread.

The season finale feels a little like Star Trek: The Role-Playing Game. Once again, it moves quickly, and it imparts a kind of direction on the season, towards a more familiar Trek.
