I’ve just heard from someone who talked to Larry
Niven himself. (She’s one of the people who
an unofficial fan site.) She says: “He does not
confirm this report, but says that it is not
accurate. He did not give more details.” It
sounds like the first person (who sent the e-mail
to someone on the Larry Niven discussion e-mail
list), from which it spread across the Web, may
have been making things up. So, all we have is
past confirmations that Robert Mandel owns the
rights, and Phil Tippett is interested. James
Cameron’s involvement cannot be confirmed, and is
starting to look like it’s simply not true.

The announcement was made by Larry Niven himself
at Albacon this weekend. As of 12:30amET on
October 6, Robert Mandel, Larry Niven, and James
Cameron have made a deal to permit James Cameron
to make a Ringworld movie. No other details are
available yet, but I’ll keep you posted.

First Aaliyah, now this… maybe “The Matrix: Reloaded” just isn’t meant to be. Gloria Foster, the actress who played the enigmatic, cookie-baking Oracle in “The Matrix” died last weekend. Most of her scenes for the second movie had already been completed, according to The
Wire, but not those for the third movie.

Every year, the Ig Nobel prizes are awarded to
researchers who do studies that cannot or should
not be repeated. A complete list of winners,
gleaned from this
official page, is reproduced below. You’ll
need to go to the official page for the
hyperlinks to their publications to work. The
winner of the Literature award should be the only
person allowed to advertise on Usenet, IMHO.

Based on the novels (which is a very good thing), the live action series will be produced by Fireworks Television and has all the support of Hasbro/Wizards of the Coast. No word on which novels will be used. For my money, I’d love to see the Icewind Dale gang.
One thing that bothered me about the D&D movie was that will all the great literature behind the game, why the script sucked so badly. Hopefully this can remedy that error.
I’ll dig around for more information and as soon as I find something tangible I’ll post it.

It’s listed as the biggest renewal commitment in the SciFi Channel’s history. Yahoo News has the full story if you need the gory details.
I’ve heard nothing but great things about this show…wish I had SciFi Channel.
