Comic Television Discussion – Week beginning 24 March 2019

This week is surprisingly light, after Black Lightning wrapped up his season last week, and a few regulars take some time off.  American Gods features one of the ravens, Supergirl lets Lex tell us where he’s been for two years, Arrow gets Laurel more involved in team, and Riverdale’s finale attacks the drug factory Farm.

Next week, The Legends of Tomorrow, Cloak and Dagger, The Tick, and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina return for new seasons. (Most of which are included below.)

Comic Television Discussion – Week beginning 17 March 2019

The season two return of American Gods was so distracting, last week’s post was completely missed.  (Feel free to talk about last week’s episodes here, as well.)  American Gods lets us see the trains we all know are circling the country and performing illicit acts of espionage.  Supergirl had already given us a new Superman for her universe, now we get to meet their `Lex, err… Lex.  Arrow goes into the future and stays there for the issue.  Black Lightning adds more metas, probably.  The Flash takes a trip out to the suburbs.  Outside of DC, Riverdale gets musical.

Comic Television Discussion – Week beginning 3 March 2019

Did anyone other than me expect more of The Gifted this season?  If so, too bad, last week was the season finale.  Apparently DC was afraid of it, and now that it is over the Arrow-verse comes back out of the woodwork for their new episodes.  Synopses are light, but Manchester Black returns to vex Supergirl and The Flash gives us the animal on animal action as King Shark takes on Gorilla Grodd.   Riverdale also continues to besmirch the names of Archie’s characters this week.

The Orville – S02E0809 – Identity

Seth MacFarlane made it big with Family Guy, a not-so-family-friendly animated comedy show, but he also worked to bring Cosmos’ revival to air and is a big fan of Star Trek.  While I can’t back up this claim, it seems as though he asked to make a new Star Trek show (before Discovery took off) and was rebuked for being the crude comedy guy.  His show had a lot of what we love about Star Trek, but he couldn’t sell it without cashing in on his crude comedy background, and as a result, we have The Orville, a clear rip off on Star Trek, but with what my wife describes as Frat Boy comedy overlaying everything.

Despite this, the show tackles serious social issues, such as the expectations of gender, social media and trial by public opinion, and porn addiction.  In the same way classic Star Trek uses strange new worlds to sign a spotlight on our own world’s problems, The Orville does the same thing within a coating of low brow comedy.

…until now.  In Identity, The Orville drops the jokes and just tells a space-based sci-fi story.  I truly think they just want their off-beat comedy to be Continue reading →

Comic Television Discussion – Week beginning 24 February 2019

DC doesn’t believe in the fourth week of February, so they have all decided to take it off.  The Gifted could see this was coming, and Archie goes back to taking his punches.  Are these two going to carry the weight for the week, or is it an excuse to phone it in until everything returns next week?

Supergirl returns, and everyone else disappears.  One has to wonders if her super costume could use a trip to the super dry cleaners.  The Gifted hides their capitalized M at the beginning while forcing others to deal with monsters.

Comic Television Discussion – Week beginning 10 February 2019

Lots missing items in our Comic Television Discussion, but we do have three DC shows this week, with Arrow, Flash and Black Lightning all dealing with their children.  Is this evidence that the super heroes on television are being targeted at the geeky kids of decades gone but now-grown-up and dealing with their children?  The Gifted also returns, as Reeva goes on a rampage and we get a Morlocks and Purifiers rumble.

Comic Television Discussion – Week beginning 27 January 2019

This week, Supergirl makes a big deal to introduce the world’s first transgender superhero on television, Arrow keeps recreating Suicide Squad, Flash’s daughter’s secrets get revealed, Black Lightning doesn’t give us a synopsis, and The Gifted takes the week off.  Riverdale continues to feel purely like a soap opera.  What are you watching, anything keeping your interest?

Comic Television Discussion – Week beginning 21 January 2019

January is screeching past us as the third week of the year is already over.  As we stride into the end of the month, the comics start seriously returning to television.  Supergirl fights to keep the name Carol Danvers from being popular, The Flash gets angry, Arrow tries to chill out, and the Legends and Black Lightning are without a synopsis.  The Gifted gets sleepy.  Riverdale prepares for their college prep tests, because those kids are actually high-schoolers, surprise!  The Punisher has released Season 2 for Netflix, and as of this posting has not been cancelled yet.  While not technically a comic, out in space the Discovery and the Orville also share a nigh of television which really highlights the differences between the two shows.

Comic Television Discussion – Week beginning 13 January 2019

Oh, there you are!  The midwinter break has come to a close and we are seeing the regular comic television return.  The Gifted weathered the winter weather better than others, even if the Bureau42 reviews did not.  That Reviewer really needs to stop messing with time lines and just post the reviews already.  The Flash has raced back to us first, with what is sure to be some sound uses of physics and technology.  Arrow thought he was out, but is pulled back in.  The Gifted has the Mutant Underground reorganize, and the Riverdale teens deal with Veronica’s father’s takeover.

Also, Netflix is giving us Season 2 of The Punisher before the inevitable annunciation of its cancellation, and in case you wanted something non-comic related, there’s a new Star Trek: Discovery.  Though if you wanted something non-comic related, you probably are in the wrong thread.
