It has been awhile since we’ve done a Weekend Review of an older film, but here’s one we missed in 2017. A Ghost Story turns its familiar premise into something we’ve never quite seen before. It earned itself numerous awards— but less time in the theatres than the filmmakers might have liked.

Star Trek Discovery Review: “Will You Take My Hand?”
The season finale feels a little like Star Trek: The Role-Playing Game. Once again, it moves quickly, and it imparts a kind of direction on the season, towards a more familiar Trek.
Star Trek Discovery: The War Without, The War Within
The Eagles pull an upset victory over the Patriots, as….
Right. Star Trek. Well, once again, we have a show that delivers a good deal of excitement and high production values. In what sense it constitutes a prequel remains an open question, or, perhaps, a question best left ignored forever.
The episode sets up a desperate and, at least, interesting war mission for next week.

Star Trek Discovery Discussion: Vaulting Ambition
A major twist– one predicted by many fans, but which I hadn’t given much credence– changes our understanding of the show. This week’s episode features wonkier science than usual, but it boasts some strong performances– and a Trek Shakespearian allusion.
Discussion here.
Star Trek Discovery Review: “The Wolf Inside”
Discovery confirms two fan predictions in a weaker but less grotesque episode than last week’s.
Star Trek Discovery Review: “Despite Yourself”
The most recent incarnation of Star Trek returns tonight—with some familiar names behind the camera.
Kiernan Shipka to play Sabrina Spellman
Kiernan Shipka who grew up on Mad Men playing Sally Draper, will star in the forthcoming Netflix adaptation of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. This is the adult-oriented Archie occult comic that presents Sabrina as a genuinely horrifying witch-child coming of age in the 1960s (though the TV show may be set in the present).
TV Review: American Gods, Season One
“They can have it back when they pray for it.”
–Ostara
Neil Gaiman’s monster-novel finally receives an adaptation, and its first season was one of the most anticipated shows of the fading year. We look back with a review.
