Virgin buys ‘Star Trek’

Yeah, the whole thing. Variety has a few details, but it looks like Paramount will no longer be (mis)managing the license. Paramount has owned the property since 1967 when it’s then-parent Gulf+Western acquired Desilu Productions.

No word on how (or if) this affects the 11th film being written and directed by J.J. Abrams.

40 Years of Star Trek

Sadly, this milestone comes at a time when there is no new Star Trek in production, and the concept behind next film has most fans saying, “eh.” Ten years ago, they knew how to celebrate a Trek anniversary.

So on Star Trek’s big day, I ask: What do you miss?

Hi-Def Trek on the way?

In this Digital Bits article, you’ll find rumours about the DVD release date of Superman Returns (Nov. 28; not announced officially) and, even more interesting, high definition Star Trek. That’s at higher resolution than the post special effects master copies. How might they do this? By taking the original pre-effects film stock and recreating the old special effects to the same specs at a higher resolution. The purist in me objects, but the realist points out that it’s akin to the first movie’s DVD release, and less dramatic than the Star Wars revamps.

TOS on TV Land

Cable channel TV Land has acquired the rights to rebroadcast the original Star Trek. They’ll be running 4 episodes (including the first-aired episode “The Man Trap”) on Star Trek’s 40th anniversary, September 8th. Regular episodes begin on November 17th.
