Weekend Review: Heavenly Creatures
This dark gem of a film from 1994 made Peter Jackson’s reputation and led to his receiving directorial duties for The Lord of the Rings. Based on one of the most notorious crimes in New Zealand history, Heavenly Creatures holds close to the facts, making heavy use of diaries kept by one of the perpetrators. It’s a thriller, a true-crime story, a drama, a romance, and– because it enters the overactive imaginations of the teens involved– a fantasy.

Stan Winston, Visual FX Titan Dies at 62
People in Hollywood come and go. A select few change the face of movie making. Among these was Stan Winston.
You see kids, back before CG, people had to make monsters, aliens, demons, and robots by hand. That’s what Stan did. Even after CG took over Hollywood, he and his team were responsible for some of the most detailed work the industry had ever seen in both animatronics and make-up.
Tonight I raise my popcorn bucket in salute and watch Jurassic Park. Maybe all three. Because Stan deserves no less.
