Weekend Review – Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Well, most of the anime I’ve reviewed fairly recently has been older stuff. However, I’ve now watched Gainax’s most recent mecha series, Gurren Lagann. So, does its drill pierce the heavens, or does it kick good taste to the curb and make the horrible possible? Continue reading →

TV Review – Impact
ABC has concluded its two-part disaster movie miniseries Impact, based around the concept of the moon crashing into the Earth. These kind of direct-to-TV miniseries tend not to do well anyway, but does this one do well at all, or does it just fail horribly. You get 2 guesses, and the first two don’t count. Continue reading →
Weekend Review – Heavy Metal 2000
I’ve come to realize that I haven’t deliberatly reviewed anything that was widly considered to be a “bad” film after a while. As someone who has seen most of the first movie, and listened to the soundtrack (and heard good things about the magazine), I have decided to give Heavy Metal 2000 a try. Is it your one-way ticket to midnight, or does it take you someplace worse? Continue reading →

In this wave they’re dropping (among other things) the 3rd and final DVD of Gurren Lagann, which is the point in the series where the series goes what can be concervatively described as bat-dren awesome. Continue reading →
Good Old Games has the Tex Murphy series
Good Old Games, a video game site focusing on older PC games has, on their new releases, the Tex Murphy series of adventure games, a series of Noir adventure games set in a post World War III San Francisco (sort of like Blade Runner meets the Continental Op, but significantly more tongue-in-cheek), that were originally put out by Wordplay.
As someone who has long enjoyed genre adventure games, I’m going to give these a try and will have reviews on the site once I’ve beaten the games. Continue reading →
Weekend Review – Patlabor The Movie 3: WXIII
We now come to the final installment (thus far) of the Patlabor Franchise – WXIII, set between the first two movies, in OVA continuity, but featuring little-to-no-members of the original cast, and with a new director for the franchise, and a new writer for the franchise, and a focus on the detective side of the equasion, rather then the giant-robot side. Does it still work, or not so much? Continue reading →
Women not wanted for IGN Contest
Tor.com is reporting that the rules for IGN’s contest to promote the science fiction film Section 9, about extra-terrestrials in Johannesburg, South Africa being denied rights and being declared “not human,” explicitly exclude women from participating.
The contest, which gets the winner a trip to the San Diego Comic Con, and would also entail that he participate in promotion of the film, says in its rules “This sweepstakes is open only to males who are both legal residents of the fifty (50) United States and Washington D.C. and who are at least between 18-24 years of age as of July 23, 2009…” (Emphasis is mine.) IGN has said that the rules for the contest were passed on to them by Colombia Tri-Star, which is releasing the film. Continue reading →
