Greatest Science Fiction Film Tournament Week 34: Round 3
Greatest Science Fiction Film Tournament Week 33: Round 3 begins
Round 3 of 8 begins, winnowing the final 64 contenders down to 32. The voting starts here. The complete elimination bracket can be seen here. Last week’s statistical upset was Island of Lost Souls (1932) losing to Charly (1968). For two straight weeks, none of the brackets were truly “close,” although that will probably happen more and more often as we get further and further into the tournament with fewer and fewer contenders.
Movie Discussion: After Earth
Reviews for After Earth have generally not been kind. The prize for abusive remarks may go to Kevin Carr of 7M Pictures, who compares the film to Rebecca Black’s “Friday” video, “a bought-and-paid-for vanity piece for a spoiled teenager who probably doesn’t know any better.”
Still, the visuals look good, even if Shyamalan’s career trajectory doesn’t. Anyone feel like a discussion?

Quicksilver will appear in Avengers and the next X-Men
He’s so fast, Quicksilver, Marvel’s Flash swipe, will appear in both the next X-Men film and the next Avengers— though the latter version will not be able to reference his father, Magneto, or any of the X-Men continuity. Evan Peters will play the X-Men version; no word on who’s in the running for the part in Whedon’s Avengers 2
Greatest Science Fiction Film Tournament Week 30: Round 2
Greatest Science Fiction Film Tournament Week 29: Round 2
The first round of eliminations continues here. The complete elimination bracket can be seen here. We had two statistical upsets last week: based on the round one voting, The Iron Giant (1999) was expected to beat E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) and Summer Wars (2009) was expected to beat Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956).
Movie Review – “Iron Man 3”
I think I may have a new favorite Christmas movie. As always, stay through the credits.
