Superman & Lois Review: “Man of Steel” and “Holding the Wrench”

“Are you out of your mind? You don’t go snooping around the guy from another world’s murder van!”

Superman faces actual life-threatening danger. The Captain Luthor arc ends for now, but a larger threat looms.

Meanwhile, on Smallville: The Next Generation, The Cushing Family drama intensifies as the Kent boys leave football behind and Lois sees a therapist.

Bureau’s Breakroom’s Television Table – Week beginning 2021 May 30

The CW takes a break this week, but before you reach for Different Content, Lucifer is still finishing his fifth season, and Superman and Lois continues this new phase of Superman’s life where he just supports his family while saving the world.  The Good Doctor starts the season finale, and we travel to Guatemala.  The Handmaid welcomes familiar a new handmaid.  The band is back together on Blacklist dealing with the monster they created while squabbling.  I hope everyone can enjoy the unofficial start to summer that is Memorial Day (in America) and have some some other fun to offset the light television schedule!

Bureau’s Breakroom’s Television Table – Week beginning 2021 May 23

A few of our shows have taken the week off, which would make it seem like there is less to watch, but the Details Carry an infernal difference as Lucifer Season 5’s second half drops.  The Legends also visit JFK, Black Lightning brings its show to a close, the Flash finishes last week’s two parter, Superman and Lois help train their son.  If you enjoyed Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. last week, Robot Chicken has an Archie Comic special for you.  The Handmaid takes her tale home.  The Good Doctor goes off camping.  The Blacklist hires a transporter.  If you need something different, Solos drops some big name talent in a new Anthology series.

Bureau’s Breakroom’s Television Table – Week beginning 2021 May 16

As it would be a Direct Contradiction to their timeline, Supergirl is off the table this week so that Superman & Lois can step in to delve into their family drama.  The Legends also bring the drama as they join a reality-TV singing show.  Batwoman fights those suffering from drug addiction.  Black Lightning exposes his weakness.  The Flash leaves us on a cliffhanger that seems to imply cast changes for next season.

If DC isn’t your kinda thing (and judging from the references on DC’s shows, it’s not their thing, either) Marvel does have a release this week, with Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K.  This is the show about the giant head in a chair, maybe in the style of (and by the folks who made) Robot Chicken.  There’s a lot of names associated with it, but I think it’s a toss up whether this will be a hit or just another on AIM’s blunders.

In more adult fare, The Nevers gibes us their season finale, revealing True’s back story.  The Good Doctor has Claire meeting her idol.  The Handmaid takes a vow.  The Blacklist might actually reveal some background info, unless the FBI can stop an assassin coming for Liz.

[Edited to add] The Underground Railroad and The Bad Batch have been added.  Be sure to comment when I miss a show, I won’t know something is out unless it’s already in my radar.

Bureau’s Breakroom’s Television Table – Week beginning 2021 May 9

First, a shout out to the Dear, Compassionate matriarch Bureaucrats (and of Bureaucrats) as we post on Mother’s day.  Thanks to you all!

Speaking of mothers, the new ones get welcomed by new Midwives answer the Call during World Cup season.  The Legends hit an unsafe churrascaria with Amelia Earhart.  The Nevers execute their penultimate episode.  Batwoman give us classic villain games.  Zoey has a flashback episode at her therapists.  Black Lightning welcomes Painkiller to the show.  The Good Doctor deals with his soon-to-be-mother’s complications.  The Flash goes back to the Wells for help.  Supergirl’s cast each get to face their deepest fear.  On Blacklist, Red tries to visit an old friend.  If you want some disturbing animation, Netflix drops the second season of the animated sci-fi show Love, Death + Robots.

Bureau’s Breakroom’s Television Table – Week beginning 2021 May 2

After last week’s Dearth, Comic-shows make a surge this week as the Legends of Tomorrow return with their season premier, as this season’s collection of baddies is introduced.  Batwoman debates coming out.  Black Lightning and his family open a new chapter after the disastrous end of last week.  The Flash goes to court, fighting against real consequences for their actions.  Supergirl has the second half of our trip to the past for Prom.  (Personally, I think they may be trying for a second attempt at a backdoor pilot to a Young Supergirl series.)  Across the pond, we have non-comic based Nevers, who use last week’s murder to advance their plans, while the Midwives don’t tell us what they are up to.  Zoey’s stop listening to her playlist to go on a double date.  The Handmaidens do a body good.  On the Blacklist, Liz and her Taskforce work on finding N-13.

Bureau’s Breakroom’s Television Table – Week beginning 2021 April 18

Spring seems to have recoiled a bit, as temperatures (at least in my portion of the globe) have turned Distractingly Chilly, much like the number of shows from the Arrowverse, as Batwoman hypocritically chases violent law breakers in masks, Black Lightning talks to the Feds, and Supergirl actually name drops Super Friends.  HBO continues exploring the world of Whedonesque X-Steampunk while they try to come out to society.  Call the Midwife returns for a tenth’s season, this time with more Thalidomide.  Zoey gets her lady friends together.  The Good Doctor also decides to be gender based, but we won’t know how until we watch it.  The Blacklist threatens us with a clip show over the series star who left the show.  The biggest event is most likely the season finale of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, concluding the Bucky/Sam road trip movie fans begged for.

Bureau’s Breakroom’s Television Table – Week beginning 2021 April 11

I hope you Didn’t Count out the Arrowverse, because they’re back on the Television Table this week, as Batwoman faces Black Mask, Pennyworth gets Salty, Black Lightning brings Painkiller back (didn’t we already announce this episode?,) The Flash faces frosty foes, and Supergirl faces the largest letdown in prequel history.  Marvel doesn’t want to be forgotten, and drops the penultimate episode of Falcon and the Winter Soldier of Friday.  If you like animation, Miraculous, Invincible, and My Hero Academia also give us new episodes.  If you are trying to stay away from super heroes, there’s Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist where she sees a medium, and Red takes a break from the Blacklist to visit rural America.

[Edited to add] The Nevers, which is basically Joss Whedon’s Victorian School for Gifted Youngsters, which dropped on Sunday as well.

Bureau’s Breakroom’s Television Table – Week beginning 2021 April 4

No foolin’, it’s April already.  Easter and Bunny Day for those who celebrate those.  Seems like a short week for television, with even less descriptions.  Invincible was added to the list, but without any description, it feels like it wasn’t worth the effort.  At least it’s in good company with the Falcon, Winter Soldier, Pennyworth, and My Hero Academia.  Zoey, at least, tells us it’s her birthday, and our Dueling Compatriots of The Flash and Supergirl tell us that Cisco and Chester return to the 90 to do their Ground Hog Day episode, and Supergirl gives us vague descriptions of their typical show.
