There’s nothing really new in this MSN Article (and we all know that y42 wants his jet pack), but it’s a good retrospect on Future Dreams that haven’t, but one day might, come true.
Anybody see an item they want to buy?

The suggestion that we get a new layout here at Bureau42 prompted a good deal of discussion. Comments were made about ads. People suggested they really liked the Alien Abduction GreenTM that has become associated with this site. Posters divided into “white on black” and “black on white” camps and held pitched battles (no, not really). Some wanted variable colours and Theme LayoutsTM. Others championed the value of more blank space in a good layout.
While Others Wished Alex Wouldn’t Type Everything in Upper Case.
Yea, there were debates furious over possible codes. And the Jupiter symbol was declared a Good ThingTM
Theangrymob (O blessings light upon his name!) has created another mock-up, which may be found here. New discussion, responses, comments?
According to Wired News, someone has realized Homer Simpson’s dream of “tomacco”— a tomato/tobacco plant. And yes, it bears fruit with nicotine, though there’s a minor catch.
And, of course, a question….
It’s Halloween again, when all manner of spook-themed films haunt the small screens. Now I could wax about James Whale’s Frankenstein and the rest of the Universal Monster Movies, or explain why I prefer Ginger Snaps to any number of mad-slasher pics. I could compose the inevitable list of best horror movies that you know is going to appear at the Bureau soon, carefully balancing heavy-hitters like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre with lower-key works such as Targets I could wonder what the Simpsons’ “Treehouse of Horror” has left to parody, or fondly recall tv specials of my youth, complaining that those Kiss fans want too much for pirate copies of Paul Lynde’s ’76 show.
But I’m not going to do that….
This is just bizarre. Someone is selling motivational posters, with upbeat Coveyesque messages brought to you by the likes of the Punisher, the Hulk, and Magneto.
Brian Bellmont (see below) has recently become the 289,004th person to suggest that the latest version of Trek might improve itself by hiring noted genre writers. After all, people like Ellison and Sturgeon wrote a couple of the original series’ best.
This likely won’t happen, but it begs a question. What might Enterprise look like if your favourite genre writer/director (dead or alive) had a hand in penning or directing an ep?
The prevailing opinion in the review of Daredevil: Out
seems to be that readers would prefer to see comic reviews
cover trade paperbacks and complete story arcs, rather than
single issues. These and other options will be suggested below;
if you have a preference, let us know.

The 50th Anniversary Hugo Awards Ceremony took place tonight at the 61st World Science Fiction Convention (Torcon 3) in Toronto, Ontario. MC Spider Robinson’s opening comments praising Science Fiction seemed at odds with the number of fantasy works which were nominated or which won.
The familiar rocket-statue was plated with gold this year, and set in carved maple representing the fury and flame of lift-off, stylized into a maple leaf.
So…. Who won?
The 61st Annual World Science Fiction Convention, “Torcon3”, opens August 28 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and runs until September 1.
Guests of Honour include George R.R. Martin, Frank Kelly Freas, Mike Glyer, and toastmasters Spider and Jeanne Robinson. Anyone coming?
