In news that surprises virtually nobody, the Star Wars comic license is moving from Dark Horse to Marvel. When Disney bought Marvel, people predicted that Marvel would publish Disney comics, even though Boom! had the license at the time. Disney allowed the deal with Boom! to expire without renewal, and then migrated the titles over, although we’ve seen less product on the shelves since then. Similarly, when Disney bought Star Wars, people expected those comics to move as well. It’s official as of today: when the deal with Dark Horse expires later in 2014, it will not be renewed, and the line will move to Marvel. There has been no word on whether the existing continuity established by Dark Horse will be used. Personally, I expect that’s really up to J. J. Abrams, and that Marvel’s publications in the first year will be tied to whatever continuity the new movies choose to employ, and/or reprints of their classic Star Wars product. Can someone check on Chad and make sure he’s okay?
According to starwars.com, Episode VII is now scheduled to be released on December 18, 2015. Just two more years of idle speculation to go…
I don’t know how I feel about this. On one hand, the two have always been distinct in the past, but on the other hand, I’d love to see Jedi Spock.
Take it for what it’s worth, since virtually every director under the sun has been rumored to have the coveted job.
When I read the news last night, I just could not seem to fire up enough energy to care. I thought it was the Zyrtec, but this morning I’m the same way (Zyrtec free). I enjoyed what he did for Star Trek, but that was a different (and with a frankly more Star Wars-like spin) Trek than what we’ve grown to love. Is there really an unspoken rule that you can’t cross between the two “big boys” of Sci-Fi? Or is it that we’re heading towards a homogenization of the genre?
It certainly lacks the nerdgasm moment of hearing “Joss Whedon will direct The Avengers.”
What say you, folks? Good? Bad? And who would be your pick to direct?
The White House has issued an official response to the petition to construct a Death Star, and it’s very well done. Check out This Isn’t the Petition Response You’re Looking For.
Gotta say, this is pretty damn decent of George:
According to THR, Lucas will use the proceeds of the sale of LucasFilm to fund his foundation to help education, Edutopia. The sale of the company, which is wholly owned by Lucas and has little debt, means he gets all the proceeds from the sale.
Meanwhile, an unnamed IRS agent was quoted as saying “Mother [Redacted]!!!”

Also, tucked into the press release is a mention of “Star Wars Episode VII”. Make of that what you will.
Key Lucas quote:
For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next. It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime.
A film about Chewbacca? Will it reconcile how he can be a top-rated general in the prequels with what we saw in the original movies?
No– because this film, in its early stages, will tell the tale of hospital-worker-turned-actor Peter Mayhew and his experiences becoming the world’s most famous Wookie back in 1977.
We hope this comes about. Meanwhile, what other smaller Star Wars films would you like to see?
Normally I would wait until the next “Newspace,” but this is pretty funny, for a rehashing of the same old fan laments.
